Tree from 6 to 8 m, strongly scaly rhytidoma. Alternate leaves, composed bifolioled, deciduous. Inflorescences spiciform. Fruits in pod briefly stipitated, flattened. Seeds with thick seed coat, finely wrinkled.
Phylogenetically, Brenierea is related to the pantropical genus Bauhinia (Banks & al., 2014). These two genera differ in their habit and leaves.
