Belongs to the monotypic genus; Subfamily: Bambusoideae; Tribe: Bambuseae.

Sympodial bamboo; monocarpic, rhizomes with long necks. Erect culms, about 10 m long or more. Leafy branches 20-30 cm long. Inflorescences terminating the leafy branches, bearing one to several spikelets. Fruits oblong with a flat and hairy apex. Young seed oblong.

Phylogenetically, Decaryochloa is related to Malagasy bamboo Cathariostachys capitata (Zhou & al., 2017).
