Belongs to the monotypic genus.

Shrub 1.5 to 3 m high or small tree up to 8 m high, aromatic, hard and very dense wood. Leaves alternate, simple and leathery. Inflorescences terminal, thyrses. Flowers large, regular, hermaphroditic.

Drupaceous fruit. Phylogenetically, Diegodendron and Bixa form a robust monophyletic clade (Johnson-Fulton & Watson, 2017).
