Belongs to the monotypic genus; Subfamily: Faboideae; Tribe: Millettieae.

Woody climbing shrub up to 10 m tall, with short, leafy, flowering branches. Leaves deciduous, trifoliolate-digitate. Inflorescences terminal, racemiform paniculate. Fruit cylindrical, attenuated at the tips, covered with felted hair; 3- 5 seeds, weakly compressed.

Phylogenetically, Disynstemon forms a clade related to the tribe of Indigofereae (Schrire & al., 2009).
