Belongs to the monotypic genus; tribe: Cratoxyleae.

Shrub or small tree up to 4.5 m. high, glabrous and evergreen. Leaves: decussate, simple. Inflorescences: corymbiform cyme. Fruit: slightly acute capsule. Seeds narrow, obtuse-winged, as wide as the seed.

Phylogenetically, Eliea is related to the tropical Asian genus Cratoxylum (Meseguer & al., 2014). Two molecules were isolated from the bark of the tree root: Elieaxanthone and Elieaflavonone (Ruphin & al. 2015). Its wood is red and difficult to work with. It is used for baking, construction and crating.The leaves are used to treat injuries and fever (Fatiany & al., 2017).
