Belongs to the monotypic genus; Subfamily: Cassinoideae.

Shrub 2 to 3 m high, glabrous. Leaves opposite, evergreen. Inflorescences axillary, cyme-like, small, pauciflorous (4-6 flowers). Flowers pentamerous. Fruit obovate, indehiscent. Seed oblong, black, without aril.

It differs from the genus Hartogia in the shape of the ovary and the morphology of the fruits. Phylogenetically, this species is related to the Malagasy species Macrynodrys mcphersonii (Bacon & al., 2016). Its wood is exploited by the local population for construction (Nakahata, 2015).
