Belongs to the monotypic genus; Subfamily: Malvoideae; Tribe: Hibisceae.

Shrub 2-4 m, woody stems. Leaves spiral, blade suborbicular, cordate. Inflorescences cymose, flowers grouped in multiflored panicles; small flowers. Helicteropsis differs from other genera in the morphology of its leaves and flowers.

Phylogenetically, it is related to Hibiscus grandidieri  (Koopman & Baum, 2008).
