Belongs to the monotypic genus.
Shrub 1 to 2 m tall. Leaves alternate, sessile, simple, glabrous. Spikes inflorescences; flowers hermaphrodite. Dry fruit, membranous, oblong; 4-5 lenticular seeds. Phylogenetically, it is related to the genera Celosia and Deeringia (Di Vincenzo & al., 2018). Henonia is used by pregnant women during the gestation period and after childbirth. In addition, it is one of the ingredients used for baby protection rituals (Randrianarivony & al., 2016).
