Belongs to the monotypic genus; Subfamily: Cinchonoideae; Tribe: Naucleeae.
Medium to large trees. Leaves opposite, simple, with domatia. Lateral inflorescences. Fruit unknown. Janotia is easily identified by its very large leaves and persistent, foliaceous stipules. Phylogenetically, it is related to Gyrostipula (Löfstrand & al., 2014).
