Trees up to 21 m high, dioecious with milky exudate. Leaves evergreen, alternate, imparipinnate. Terminal and/or axillary panicles; flowers (sub)sessile. Drupe oblong to ovoid, 3-locular; mesocarp thin; endocarp bony.This species shares morphological affinities in leaves and inflorescences with the genus Poupartia.
Phylogenetically, Poupartiopsis forms a monophyletic group with the genera Poupartia and Operculicarya within Spondioideae subfamily (Pell & al., 2008). It is used as crating and construction wood.
