37. Poupartiopsis spondiocarpus (EDGE species)

Belongs to the monotypic genus; Subfamily: Spondioideae.

Trees up to 21 m high, dioecious with milky exudate. Leaves evergreen, alternate, imparipinnate. Terminal and/or axillary panicles; flowers (sub)sessile. Drupe oblong to ovoid, 3-locular; mesocarp thin; endocarp bony.This species shares morphological affinities in leaves and inflorescences with the genus Poupartia.

Phylogenetically, Poupartiopsis forms a monophyletic group with the genera Poupartia and Operculicarya within Spondioideae subfamily (Pell & al., 2008). It is used as crating and construction wood.

P. spondiocarpus is endemic to the eastern coast of Madagascar, in Antsiranana (SAVA Region), Toamasina (Analanjirofo and Atsinanana Regions), Fianarantsoa (Atsimo-Atsinanana Region) and Toliara (Anosy Region) Provinces.

This species occurs in Ankarabolava (Cat. VI), Loky Manambato (Cat. V) and Tsitongambarika (Cat. VI) Protected Areas.

It is reported from ex situ collections (BGCI 2022).
