Belongs to the ditypic genus: R. grandifolia and R. milleri; Subfamily: Ixoroideae; Tribe: Pavetteae.

Large shrub or tree up to 12 m tall (dbh up to 20 cm). Leaves decussate, simple, subcoriaceous, covered with long hairs erect on the face. Inflorescences terminal, in dichasial cyme. Fruit drupaceous, ovoid with 5 longitudinal ribs. Dark brown bean-shaped seed. The wood from this tree is used as firewoods and as construction material.

R. grandifolia is endemic in Antsiranana (SAVA Region), Fianarantsoa(Amoron'i Mania, Haute Matsiatra and Ihorombe Regions), Mahajanga (SofiaRegion) and Toamasina (Alaotra-Mangoro and Analanjirofo) Provinces.

This species occurs in Analamazaotra (Cat. II), Anjanaharibe-Sud (Cat. IV), Makira (Cat. II), Mangabe (Cat. VI), Mantadia (Cat. II), Masoala (Cat. II), Marojejy (Cat. II), Torotorofotsy Ramsar site and Zahamena (Cat. II) Protected Areas.

It is not reported in ex situ collections (BGCI 2022).
