6. Thelethylax isalensis (EDGE species)

Belongs to the ditypic genus: T. isalensis and T. minutiflora.

Aquatic herbaceous, thalloid basal part, narrow, ribbon-shaped, bearing on its margins alternating small shoots of 3-4 leaves. Distal leaves very long. Capsule with 2 equal valves. Seeds unknown.

It differs from T. minutiflora in the number of leaves surrounding the spathella. Thelethylax is distinct from African Podostemaceae by its ovoid capsule (Cook & Rutishauser, 2007).

T. isalensis is only known from one locality in the Ihorombe Region of Fianarantsoa Province.

Habitat and Ecology

Torrents at the bottom of narrow gorges, on Permian-Triassic sandstone.

Threats

Illegal mining and quarrying activities, wildfires and pollution of streams through
deposition of waste and from smoke and ash.

Conservation

This species occurs in Isalo (Cat. II) Protected Area.
It is not reported in ex situ collections (BGCI 2022).
